Antonio Bastardo is set to take the mound tonight against the Padres and Jake Peavy. When Brett Myers went down for the year, the Phillies knew they had to make some type of move to fill out the starting rotation, even temporarily. That move was to send John Mayberry Jr. back down to make room for Bastardo. Was this just a routine call up to replace Myers or was it a little more than that?
Its no secret that the Phillies will look to and have discussions with the San Diego Padres regarding ace Jake Peavy wearing Phillies pinstripes. Its also no secret that the Padres will be looking for some form of pitching in return.
Tuesday night is a great opportunity for the Phillies to showcase the young Bastardo right in front of the Padres. You can bet that the Padres brass will be watching Antonio Bastardo very closely tonight and may even exchange some brief words with Ruben Amaro Jr. too.
